Course Modules

Recognise a life-threatening emergency. Ensure scene safety. Activate Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Understand the Chain of Survival framework and the role of the bystander responder.

Perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adult patients. Correct hand placement, compression depth (5–6 cm), compression rate (100–120 per minute), and chest recoil. Ratio of compressions to rescue breaths. Compression-only CPR for untrained bystanders.

Safe deployment and operation of AEDs in workplace environments. Pad placement, rhythm analysis, shock delivery, and resuming CPR immediately after defibrillation. AED maintenance responsibilities for designated first aiders.

Head-tilt chin-lift and jaw-thrust manoeuvres. Barrier devices (pocket mask, bag-valve-mask). Recognition of airway obstruction. Recovery position for unresponsive breathing patients.

Recognition of mild versus severe airway obstruction. Abdominal thrusts (Heimlich manoeuvre) for adults and children. Back blows and chest thrusts for infants. Response to unconscious choking victim.

Differences in BLS technique for children (1 year to puberty) and infants (under 1 year). CPR ratios, compression depth, and rescue breathing adaptations for paediatric patients.

Management of common workplace emergencies: bleeding control, burns, fractures, shock, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, heat exhaustion, and seizures. Triage principles for multi-casualty incidents.

Assessment & Certification

The programme combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practical sessions on manikins, AED trainers, and first aid equipment. To achieve certification, participants must:

1. Complete all theoretical modules and participate in group exercises

2. Demonstrate competency in adult CPR — assessed by the course instructor

3. Demonstrate correct AED operation — assessed by the course instructor

4. Pass a written knowledge assessment

Successful participants receive the SHA BLS Certificate, issued by the Saudi Heart Association. The certificate carries a unique identification number and is valid for 2 years from the date of issue. EFTC provides renewal training before expiry.
