Course Modules

Defining environmental sustainability in the context of Saudi Arabia’s industrial economy. Understanding environmental risk as a business risk: regulatory fines, reputational damage, loss of contracts, and stranded asset exposure. Identifying sustainability opportunities: cost reduction through resource efficiency, access to green financing, improved stakeholder relationships, and competitive differentiation in a sustainability-conscious procurement environment.

Mapping Saudi environmental regulations: Ministry of Environment requirements, NCEC standards, and SASO environmental guidelines. International frameworks relevant to Saudi-based multinationals: ISO 14001, UN SDGs, Paris Agreement obligations. Understanding how sustainability compliance obligations flow down through supply chains — from Saudi Aramco and SABIC to their tier-1 and tier-2 contractors.

How environmental sustainability creates and constrains strategic options for Saudi organisations. Environmental strategy integration into business planning cycles. Stakeholder mapping: understanding the expectations of clients, regulators, investors, and communities. The business case for proactive environmental management versus reactive compliance.

Saudi Arabia faces significant resource efficiency challenges: one of the world’s highest per-capita energy consumption rates, extreme water scarcity, and high waste generation in construction and industrial sectors. This module provides managers with practical tools for energy auditing, water consumption management, materials efficiency analysis, and waste minimisation — with direct application to industrial and commercial operations in the Kingdom.

Understanding the environmental footprint of different Saudi industry sectors: carbon emissions from energy use, water extraction and contamination, waste generation, biodiversity impact, air quality, and noise. Life cycle thinking: considering environmental impact across the full value chain from raw materials to disposal. Applying this understanding to prioritise environmental improvement actions in your specific operational context.

Saudi regulatory requirements for preventing and managing environmental pollution. Types of pollution relevant to Saudi workplaces: air emissions (including fugitive dust from construction), wastewater discharge, hazardous waste management, chemical spill prevention and response, and soil contamination. The Hierarchy of Environmental Control: prevention → reduction → treatment → disposal.

ISO 14001 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and the framework most commonly required by Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and major project contractors. This module equips managers with a working understanding of ISO 14001 structure, requirements, and implementation. Topics include: the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, significant aspects and impacts assessment, environmental objectives and targets, monitoring and measurement, internal audit basics, and management review. Managers who complete this module can contribute effectively to their organisation’s ISO 14001 certification process.

What gets measured gets managed. This module covers environmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for different Saudi industry sectors, leading and lagging environmental performance metrics, data collection and trend analysis, environmental reporting frameworks (GRI, CDP, Saudi-specific disclosure requirements), and how to present sustainability performance data to senior leadership in a business-relevant format.

The most robust environmental management system will fail without engaged employees. This module provides managers with practical engagement strategies: communicating sustainability goals in a way that resonates across a multicultural Saudi workforce, creating local environmental champions within operational teams, embedding sustainability into daily work procedures, and measuring the effectiveness of employee sustainability engagement programmes.

Yes. ISEP is the rebrand of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment). The ISEP Environmental Sustainability Skills for Managers directly supersedes the IEMA qualification of the same name. All content has been updated to reflect current standards and best practices.

Absolutely. The course is designed to build environmental management competence regardless of your organisation’s current certification status. It is equally valuable for organisations working towards ISO 14001 certification and those already certified.

EFTC’s delivery of this programme is contextualised for Saudi Arabia, including explicit reference to Vision 2030 targets, Saudi Aramco sustainability commitments, and relevant Saudi Ministry of Environment regulations.

The ISEP Foundation Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management provides the next level of qualification. For environmental auditing specifically, the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course is the natural progression.
